Session 3 Review & Overview
Let’s see where we are today.
In our first session, we began by discussing spirituality in general. We said that spirituality is a universal sense of interconnection with the Transcendent—that is God and the Universe—humanity, and our own destiny.
In the second half of that session, at Step 1, we considered the signs of unmanageability in life, and how it was caused by self-reliance and the illusion of control. We determined that the only way out of the disastrous trap of unmanageability was to admit that we are powerless.
In our second session, we looked for ways to find the Power that we need outside of ourselves, especially in our Higher Power, which we’re calling God. Then, we examined the differences between belief in God, which is faith, and trust in God, which is hope, when we made the decision to turn our will and our lives over to God. As we turn our will and our lives over to the care of God today, we might offer this prayer:
At this point, we have re-established a connection to God. We’re going to be taking a look now at ways we can rebuild our connection with ourselves—that is, to restore our self-esteem.
In our struggle to stay in control of our wills and our lives, we’ve created messes all over the place. By our actions, we’ve spoiled our relationships with other people and left a trail of hurt behind that’s caused us to feel disappointed in ourselves or even worthless. Our self-esteem has taken a barrage of hits from the things we’ve said and done and the things we’ve left undone that we should have. Today, we’ll see how we can clean up our messes.
In Step 4, we’ll be learning how to take inventory of our physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual selves. This inventory will provide us with a roadmap that we can use going forward to clean up our messes. This will not be easy. What we find may not be pretty, but it’s essential.
Once we’ve seen what needs to be done, the next step—Step 5—is actually doing it. In the second half of our session today, we’ll explain how we need to go about it, why it’s necessary, and how it works.
