“The Devil Made Me Do It” – Rethinking Evil and Sin

(Week 1) Creation: Origin of Evil

Question: Why does God permit evil?
    Scripture: Genesis 1:1-5
In the beginning, when God created the heavens and the earth—and the earth was without form or shape, with darkness over the abyss and a mighty wind sweeping over the waters—Then God said: Let there be light, and there was light. God saw that the light was good. God then separated the light from the darkness. God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.” Evening came, and morning followed—the first day.”

    Description:
God and “Creation” (the universe) are irreconcilable. They have two divergent ways of existing: God is uni-dimensional, while Creation is multi-dimensional; God’s existence is eternal (and unlimited), Creation’s is spacio-temporal (and limited). In God, there is only “good;” in Creation, “good” and “evil” coexist. Where did the “evil” come from? How can this be?

“The Devil Made Me Do It” – Rethinking Evil and Sin

(Week 2) The World: Not What It Seems

Question: Why is my world so different from theirs?
    Scripture: Psalm 8: 4-9
When I see your heavens, the work of your fingers,
the moon and stars that you set in place—
What are we that you are mindful of us,
and our families that you care for us?
Yet you have made us little less than gods,
crowned us with glory and honor.
You have given us rule over the works of your hands,
put all things at our feet:
     All sheep and oxen,
even the beasts of the field,
The birds of the air, the fish of the sea,
and whatever swims the paths of the seas.”

    Description:
The world as we understand it is a confusing place, full of conflicting ideas, values, and even realities. It’s a dog-eat-dog, survival-of-the-fittest world. We don’t seem to be able to agree on anything. We all have our own conflicting opinions. Is there any such thing as “truth?”
