“The Devil Made Me Do It” – Rethinking Evil and Sin

    (Week 3) Choices: Intentional Evolution

Question: How can I make better choices?
    Scripture: James 1:2-5
Consider it all joy, my brothers, when you encounter various trials, for you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. And let perseverance be perfect, so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. But if any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God who gives to all generously and ungrudgingly, and he will be given it.

    Introduction:
Making right choices depends upon our capacity for knowledge, understanding, intuition, and the discernment of values (“wisdom”). The meanings we impose upon the world as we understand it and on our relationships are determined by our moral maturity. How can I evolve morally?

“The Devil Made Me Do It” – Rethinking Evil and Sin

(Week 4) Sin: Taking Responsibility I

    Question: Is all wrong-doing “sin?”
    Scripture: Galatians 5:15-23
Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.

    Description:
When I do wrong, I ignore my obligations, I shirk my responsibilities, I commit injustice and fail to love. I don’t often do these things deliberately. When I do that, is that a “sin?” What does it mean to “sin?” Why do I do it? And what is my responsibility for it?

“The Devil Made Me Do It” – Rethinking Evil and Sin

    (Week 6) Kenosis: Evil Re-imagined

Question: How can I find the peace and joy I long for?
    Scripture: Philippians 2:5-11
Have among yourselves the same attitude that is also yours in Christ Jesus,
Who, though he was in the form of God,

did not regard equality with God something to be grasped.
        Rather, he emptied himself,
taking the form of a slave,
        coming in human likeness;
        and found human in appearance,
        he humbled himself,
            becoming obedient to death,
            even death on a cross.
Because of this, God greatly exalted him
and bestowed on him the name
        that is above every name,
that at the name of Jesus
        every knee should bend,
of those in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
        and every tongue confess that
        Jesus Christ is Lord,
to the glory of God the Father.

    Description:
The meaning we give to our world is laced through with fear. We are promised the consolation and the power of the Spirit who raised Jesus from the dead. But there is a price. We must be willing to turn away from our old ideas and accept a new set of core values. Are we up to the challenge?
